  • Failed up date.

Not sure what is going on but this is the second time it has happened, when i go to up date it comes up with "failed to find the update data file" the last time it happened i reinstalled the program & it fixed it , i'm hoping i don't have to keep doing this as i had to reinstall all my downloads again.
Any idea why this would be happening & if it can be fixed ?

Please answer these questions so we can look into it:

      1. What version of Scrapbook MAX! are you currently using? You can check by going to the "Help" menu within the software and clicking on "About".

      2. What operating system are you using? (e.g. Windows 98?, Windows XP?)
Scrapbook MAX! 2.0 is here!. It's simply better digital scrapbooking software!

          Hi JoJo,

When you receive the "Failed to find update data file" message, this means Scrapbook MAX! is looking for a file that should always exist in the Scrapbook MAX! program directory called "Update.dat". You mentioned that when you previously reinstalled it worked, which means that the file did initially install correctly. At some point between the two updates, the file went missing. It is difficult to think of a reason it would go missing and the only things that come to mind are manual accidental deletion, virus software mistakenly removing it, or even a virus. These are of course just guesses, but in any case, that is the source of this particular problem.

Now you mentioned that when you reinstalled last time, you had to download all of your content again. You should never have to do that. Uninstalling should never remove any of the files you've included yourself in the gallery. They should still exist there even if you uninstalled. While we generally suggest uninstalling, what you can also do is simply run the install again without uninstalling and it will overwrite the files it needs and will leave the rest of the files alone. The key here is to find out when this file is going missing. After you reinstall, check if the file is there. Then check again after you apply the update (Help > Check for Update). That may provide a clue as to what is happening.

          And now mackie,

Are you receiving this exact error message as well when you select Help > Check for Update?

Let us know what the results are.

Hi. My message is "Update info could not be downloaded. Please contact..."

I am really new to this computer business, so please excuse me if I seem a little slow.

            Thanking you in advance.

              Hi Mackie,

The message you mentioned refers to a few data files that are initially downloaded when you start the update. Have you tried several times since? From time to time, there are disruptions in Internet connections, so that is one possible cause.

Another possible cause is that you have a hardware or software firewall that is preventing the Scrapbook MAX! updater from accessing the Internet. I realize you mentioned you are fairly new to computers, but is that a possibility?

              Let us know.

                  update

                  Yeah.
I finally have the update. First I tried the firewall and that didn't work so I turned off Norton and the update came through.

                  Thanks Darryl for the help.

                      Thanks

I finally did it! I'm not sure of all the stuff you fixed on this program but I sure do know I Love it even more. For some reason or another this thing is zoomin' now! I did have to turn off the fire wall and virus program to install.
                      Thanks A Bunch!

I'm happy to hear you all were successful in getting those updates. Those types of problems are often difficult to diagnose remotely.

crops2dawn, we had worked on a few areas that may yield better performance, so we're happy to hear it seems to be a little better.
