  • Photoshop 5.0 transparency

I read many of the instructions for Photoshop elements, and tried to follow them even though I have Photoshop 5.0. I get the transparent background OK, but I don't have the option to save to the web. I need to flatten an image to save in any format other than .psd. When I flatten the image, I lose the transparency. Since this is a powerful program, I should be able to save a transparency. Is anyone else using Photoshop 5.0 and can help me?

      jpg photo

I opened a jpg photo in Photoshop 5.0, removed the background, and tried to save it as a png file but I keep getting the white background. I don't have a "save to web" as instructed in Photoshop Elements. Can I save a transparency in 5.0? It seems I need the add-0n "Image Ready" to do this.

I'm not sure what's happening then without looking at the file. I'm fairly new at things Photoshop. I have Elements 4.0 and Photoshop 7.0. I tried what you are doing in both and it saved fine as a png. When I opened it up in a picture viewer (irFanView) it showed a white background but when I put it in a test web page and then in SBM it was transparent as expected.

After making the png have you tried importing it into Scrapbook MAX! to see if the transparency is working?

Hang in there. I'm sure we can sort this out or someone with more knowledge of your version will chime in.

Hi there.... Check to see if there are two choices for saving in png format. That is because there are two kinds of pngs. One will work for masks, the other, transparent png, is for saving without the white background. I have Photoshop 7 and PS Elements, but I have a feeling that this is the problem you're having.

                  Finally found the answer!

I really appreciate all the advice. It made me realize I needed to move up to Photoshop 6 which I also had access to but refused to learn until now. Image Ready solved my problem, but today I learned how to use Photoshop 6 to do the same thing. "Save to the Web" was my answer. I could then select Png-24 from the palette on the right side. Not sure if I solved ALL my problems, but I was able to create a transparency to use in MAX. Thanks!
