Yes it hit me in the heart. Though I was only 8 years old at the time---that day is as clear as yesterday. My mother had 11 children and that Christmas we had gifts from the world. That was my first Christmas that I got everything as if I was a boy. They thought my name was Ian. Toronto Maple Leaf sent complete hockey outfits for all the boys. But you know what it was the giving that meant alot and the only Christmas that made such fond memories for me.I was so greatful that people cared so much.I still do not know how my mother did it but she was truly an Angel.I sure miss her.

Hi! I didn't realize you are from NS. I was born in Halifax and haven't been back there since 1977. I would love to be able to go but due to the cost of airfare I haven't been able to go. There is no place prettier than NS.

My father worked in the coal mines in the Netherlands for 25 years. He started there as a teenager at 14 years old. Most men in our neighborhood worked in the mines and we lived in mine sponsored housing. My father did not die while he worked there, but the coal mines killed him in the long run when years later he developed Mesothelioma. A very agressive type of lung cancer that can linger dormant in the body for years.
Ii's so very sad you had to lose your father so young Eye, at least I had mine while I grew up and even then it was difficult losing him.

How sad, Eye. I'm so sorry. Death is truly an enemy. The song is lovely, and I thank you for sharing it with us. My mom's father worked in a mine. He died when my mom was very little. I guess tragedy touches us all!

It is sad Granny when people we love are taken way too soon, but death does not have to be the enemy. Many of us believe there is more then this life. There is hope for a after life to those who believe. (Did not mean to preach here)

It is a very touching song. There seems to be a lot of "Mining" descendents here. My Dad's Grandfather (on his Mother's side") and his uncles were all coal miners in Indiana. I don't know of any disasters there off hand but it was very awful work and definately bad on the lungs. I can't imagine losing a parent when you were so young. My father died of a massive heart attack when I was 28 he was only 56 (7 years older than myself). I think any age is hard, but when your only 8..I can't imagine.
